Where did the tradition of Advent calendars come from?
The first ever printed Advent calendar was made in Germany in the early 20th century and it all started with a young child called Gerhard Lang and his mother. His mother made him an Advent calendar with 24 small sweets stuck to a square of cardboard, with one to be eaten for each day over the Advent period.
This is thought to be from where the idea originated and when Lang grew up, he opened a printing office with his friend Reichhold. In 1908, they produced what is thought to be the first ever printed Advent Calendar. It had small pictures, one marking each day between 1st to 24th December. A few years on, Lang added the concept of 24 little doors - this added an element of surprise to what each picture would be.
Today the concept of the Advent Calendar has snowballed and pictures behind doors have been replaced by chocolate, sweets and even Gin. With recent advances in technology, we can now offer you a range of personalised Advent Calendars which can be customised with your child's name and some, like our personalised santa advent countdown kit, which you can even make your own.
